Annual interfaith picnic to return Sept. 5

Food, conversation, music, and activities with community members of all faiths will be shared at the 8th annual interfaith potluck picnic and food drive from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

The event, hosted by the Interfaith community of Carson City, will offer music and entertainment from different faith groups, adding to the diversity of the occasion.

In addition, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be on hand to provide assistance accept nonperishable food donations and personal care items to benefit the food pantry at Friends in Service Helping, or FISH.

This year the Interfaith Earthcare is encouraging people to ride their bicycles to the picnic where they will be blessed.

All attendees are encouraged to bring a main dish, salad, side dish, or dessert to share on our potluck food banquet. Cold water will be provided, however, attendees will need to bring their own container for the water, in addition to a set of plates, eating utensils, and lawn chair.

Participating faith-based congregations include: Baha’I; Buddhist; Catholic; Episcopal; Hindu; Islam; Jewish; Latter-day Saints; Lutheran; Methodist; Presbyterian; Sikh; Unity.

The church is at the corner of Division and Telegraph streets.

Local church celebrating World Day of Prayer

Thousands of people will join Silent Unity — an international, transdenominational 24/7 prayer ministry — and Unity churches and centers around the world on Sept. 8 for the 23rd annual Unity World Day of Prayer.

The theme of the 24-hour prayer event is “Discover the Power Within: Unleash Your Divine Potential.” This year’s affirmation is, “As I discover the power within, I unleash my divine potential.”

The 24-hour Prayer Vigil will begin the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 7, and continue through Thursday, Sept. 8. People of all faiths are invited to join in this sacred prayer activity. Names can be submitted for prayer online at worlddayofprayer.org, where virtual candles also can be lit. The candles will be displayed as points of light on a global map.

In addition, Unity of the Sierra, 1933 California St., is hosting a guided meditation at noon and a prayer vigil from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 8.
