Burning Man is expected to draw 70,000 people to the playa east of Gerlach this week.
The Burners are coming!
That’s right, carloads of “Burners,” those zany counter-culturalists who flock to the Burning Man celebration each year for a week-long festival of offbeat art, games, music and radical self-expression, will soon be passing through Carson City on highways 50 and 95 en route to their 2016 wild, crazy and outlandish extravaganza.
The event, which begins Aug. 28 and ends on Labor Day, Sept. 5, will be held at a remote site in the Nevada desert north of Reno off Highway 447 near Gerlach.
When Burning Man was founded at San Francisco in 1988, about 200 people turned up. This year, more than 68,000 are expected to attend, according to Burning Man officials.
The event features The Burning Man wooden statue that traditionally is set on fire the last day of the event, over-the-top vehicles that patrol Black Rock City where the celebration is held annually, and two statues of Burning Man constructed of wire and metal that were welded together.
