Celebrating the Best of the Best of Carson City

When it comes to the best customer service, restaurant, gaming, people and entertainment in town, Carson City has spoken.

The Nevada Appeal tallied up 63,000 votes for this year’s Best of Carson City nominations. At a luncheon Tuesday, awards were presented to first, second and third place winners at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino.

The Nevada Appeal continues to host the Best of Carson City annually to value those who bring a quality of life to the community, and spread the word about them beyond county lines.

Although all winners were grateful for the community’s support, many expressed their pride of connecting with those who call Carson City home.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong was named Best Law Enforcement Officer, making it his 13th award of the annual contest. However, Furlong said he couldn’t have achieved the award alone.

“Considering the events that happened within the past year, it’s the department and people that make up the community,” he said. “It’s the community character that develops these recognitions and I could not be more thrilled.”

Katie Leao, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, said the board is grateful to serve a community such as Carson City’s. They won first place for Best Child/Day Care Provider.

“We’re lucky to have five local sites,” she said. “The fact that we provide unique service in town for children to participate after school and during the summer makes us a great organization for the community.”

Sierra Nevada Electric made a shout out to their customers for helping them achieve first place for Best Electrician.

“We appreciate our clients for doing this for us,” said Senior Technician Jack Hay. “Without their continuous support, we wouldn’t be where we are.”

Ali Arbabha, owner of LA Bakery, placed in multiple categories. He said the public has been voting for the bakery since 2012.

“We are lucky to have the support we receive,” he said. “This year, we competed with 64 restaurants and that’s a big deal for us.”

Charles Bloomfield, general manager of Kim Lee’s Sushi & Oyster Bar, isn’t only celebrating 17 years of first place for Best Sushi; the restaurant also won a new award, first place for Best Customer Service.

“We’re happy to be a part of Carson City and we continue to do so for years and years,” he said.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Lesli Hewitt-Spears said she’s proud to place second for her business, Quail Ridge Animal Hospital.

“We are excited to represent the community and we strive to continue for excellent client care,” she said.
