Fire: Muller’s Hotel chimney caught fire and blazed at such a searing rate as to cause an alarm and ringing of the bell. Firemen were promptly on hand, as usual.

Bribery Law: The law should be amended so that a man offering or agreeing to sell his vote be punished. The scalawags who follow politicians on election day and try to get purchasers for votes perjure themselves — and get the man in trouble who refused to deal with him.

Death of O.T. Barber: Mr. Barber was a member of the state legislature from Storey County and met Miss Callie Ferris who later became his wife. Mr. Barber built the handsome residence now occupied by Judge Belknap and family. (This house was later owned by George Critiser and still exists).

70 Years Ago

John A. “Snowshoe” Thompson was profiled in the magazine “Coronet”: For 20 unrewarded years Snowshoe Thompson skied the mail over the mountain between Placerville, Calif., and Carson City. He wore funny looking snowshoes and that was how he got his nickname of “Snowshoe.” Officials of the state of Nevada and Carson City signed a petition to the U.S. post office recommending that Thompson be paid — but no money ever came.

Printed pleasures: This is the time to give printed pleasures such as the “Bible Then & Now.” Also available are classic carols in “Sing Noel.” Another is a book that isn’t sweetness and light, but a book about the sea and the allure of historic wrecks in “The Search for Sunken Treasure.”
