Self confidence: “Suppose you had built an engine yourself, performed every part of the work without assistance, and knew that it was in complete order, but when put into a vessel the pump would not draw water — what would you do?” The young man promptly replied: “I should go to the side of the vessel and ascertain if there was any water in the river.”

130 years ago

Money is closer than ever now. The merchants say that bills are very hard to collect because everybody is putting all they can rake and scrape into stocks. Every dollar that can be spared in Carson is going over the counters of the Bullion and Exchange Bank.

100 years ago

Within a night or two a meeting will be held at some public place for the purpose of making arrangements for the holding in Carson of a public Christmas tree and ball, the proceeds of which will be devoted to some meritorious cause.

70 years ago

The first meeting of the recently named emergency housing committee is scheduled to be held tonight in the commissioner’s room at the courthouse, according to chairman Mayor George Lind. One of the functions will be enlist the aid of landlords and property owners to give returning veterans first preference in rentals.

50 years ago

Carson college short on cash: The “Oxford of the West” — a refugee from its own campus — found itself bounded today by an automatic laundry, a catering service and a sea of red ink. Out on the campus, two miles from town, the well drillers were still doggedly digging for water. Meanwhile the campus was short on ivy, but the sagebrush is doing fine.

30 years ago

A roomful of speakers urged the Public Service Commission on Wednesday to approve Nevada Bell’s request to drop its controversial 976 service, which includes dial-a-porn calls.
