The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the 10 Carson City Sheriff’s staff for being honored for their actions in the 2014 Sand Mountain Shooting. Sergeants Darrin Sloan and John Hitch and deputies James Boggan and Chris Rivera were awarded with the Medal of Valor, and Deputies Dan Jones and Jerrod Adams, Reserve Deputy Daniel Boyer and Dispatchers Liz Hertz, Marj Knowles and Jennifer Schober were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. The department also announced their newest sergeant, Sgt. Matthew Smith. Smith has been with the department for more than a decade, serving as a Field Training Officer and a Motor Unit deputy. Also honored were Joe Bruno as Volunteer of the Year; the Detective Division as Team of the Year; Sgt. Daniel Gonzalez as Supervisor of the Year; Volunteer Coordinator Ken Smith as Civilian of the Year; and Deputy Darin Riggin as Sworn Officer of the Year.

SILVER DOLLAR: Also to retiring Carson City Juvenile Probation Services Chief Ben Bianchi for his more than 25 years of service and to Deputy Chief Ali Banister, who takes over as Juvenile Probation Services Chief.
