Education achievements: Two from Carson City make Gonzaga President’s List

Local women honored

Three area natives were honored at their respective universities.

Callen Aten and Mia Cavilia of Carson City were named to the fall 2015 president’s list at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. To make the list, students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 grade-point average.

Gardnerville’s Jocelyn Contreras was named to the fall 2015 dean’s list at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

The list includes undergraduate students who earned a 3.4 or better grade-point average. Contreras plans to graduate in 2018.

Scholarships offered to area students

The Carson City Retired School Employees Association is offering three $1,000 scholarships to local students interested in pursuing a career in education at a Nevada institution of higher learning.

One Edith Milo scholarship will be awarded to a student from Carson or Pioneer high schools; another will be given to a student at Dayton High School.

The Charles Pettycrew scholarship will be awarded to a student attending Western Nevada College.

Yerington man playing with university band

Nick Harding, a Yerington native, is performing with Concordia University’s Nebraska University Symphonic Band at 3 p.m. Feb. 21 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb.

The ensemble, open to all Concordia students by audition, tours a part of the United States annually. Harding plays the euphonium.
