Northern Nevada Business Weekly: Tell us about your company and the duties of your position.
Jim Newman: Established in 1947, Holland & Hart today has approximately 500 lawyers providing a full range of services from 15 offices across the Mountain West and in Washington, D.C. Our value proposition is to provide our clients in the region and beyond with the breadth and depth of experience to enable them to meet their business objectives. We offer a client-driven culture with service that is personalized, responsive, and innovative.
I practice in the areas of Mergers and Acquisitions, Business, Corporate and Finance, and Securities and Capital Markets. I am also the administrative partner for northern Nevada. I manage the Reno and Carson City offices including recruiting and marketing.
NNBW: How did you get into this profession?
Newman: I considered law after college, but had several other jobs before turning to law later in life.
NNBW: What do you enjoy most about working in your field.
Newman: I enjoy the interesting and challenging work.
NNBW: What is the most challenging part about your job?
Newman: The most challenging part is juggling the tasks and deadlines that come at the same time.
NNBW: What advice would give anyone who wants to get in your profession?
Newman: Talk to a practicing attorney; understand the time commitment involved.
NNBW: What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Newman: Never make an investment or agree to give money to someone you’ve only met over the telephone.
NNBW: What was your first job?
Newman: I had a paper route in Niagara Falls, New York
NNBW: What are your hobbies? How do you spend your time away from work?
Newman: I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends.
NNBW: Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
Newman: Half Moon Bay, Calif.
NNBW: If you had one moment in time to cherish for the rest of your life either professionally or personally, what would it be and why?
Newman: I cherish the day my son was born because nothing can top that.
NNBW: Last concert or sporting event attended?
Newman: I attended a U2 concert in Phoenix in April 2015.
NNBW: What did you dream of becoming as a kid?
Newman: I don’t remember.
NNBW: Why did you choose a career in northern Nevada? What do you like about living/working here?
Newman: I chose Nevada because of family. I enjoy the small town atmosphere and like that it’s easy to get around.
