Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education program is presenting its Career Expo Thursday, Feb. 18 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the high school in Senator Square. The Expo is open to the general public as well as all Carson High School students.
“CTE programs are putting education funding where there is demand,” Michele Lewis, Carson City School District CTE program administrator, said. “Wherever there are industry sectors booming in Nevada, we are making sure we have curriculum to get our students ready to meet the growing demand for job skills.”
Representatives from local colleges, job and career services and branches of the military will provide information on post-secondary options, including Western Nevada College, The University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College and Career College of Northern Nevada.
Area resources including the Nevada Builders Association, Partnership Carson City and Western Apprenticeship Association, among others, will also be present.
In addition, employers in the CTE program area, including Greater Nevada Credit Union, Bentley Enterprises and Starbucks, will be present to provide information on career pathways. CTE teachers and students will present demonstrations beginning at 6 p.m. in their respective classrooms following a 5:30 p.m. parents’ assembly in the school gym.
Lewis said Carson High School is unique with its wide range of CTE offerings, and by providing courses in all six of the state’s career clusters, offers more CTE programs than most comprehensive high schools in the state. Many schools focus on some, but not all, of the six career clusters.
The Carson High School CTE program is part of Gov. Sandoval’s CTE initiative, which includes professions in agriculture and natural resources management, business and marketing, hospitality and tourism, information and media technologies, and skilled and technical sciences. Many students will test for and hold national certifications in their chosen field upon graduating from high school.
