Carson City Board of Supervisors approve toilet for gun range

The Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday directed city parks officials to apply for a grant to build a toilet at the Rifle and Pistol Range.

Parks Director Vern Krahn told the board three quarters of the $60,000 needed for the project would come from the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

“The department feels that we need to provide that basic amenity for people,” Krahn said.

Supervisor Brad Bonkowski asked what can be done to protect the toilet.

“If you have used the rifle range, it gets abused,” he said. “What can be done to prevent people from shooting up the toilet.”

Krahn said the rifle and pistol clubs who use the range have monitors to watch and prevent that kind of activity. He said the toilet by CTX Toilet is a concrete building, which he said is much easier to repair than a concrete block building if it does get shot up.

He said the range also will soon have an automated gate to lock the facility after dark, which will hopefully reduce that kind of activity.

He said the city has to raise 25 percent of the total cost as a match but the Northern Sierra Ladies Gun Club has already come up with $3,450 of that and other organizations have raised some $2,750. That leaves about $8,000 for the city to put into the project.

The vote for the project was unanimous.
