SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: First — and second responders

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: It was actually a pleasant surprise for Diane O’Callaghan of Silver Springs when she saw EMT personnel coming back to her home a day after taking her husband, Clyde, a disabled Vietnam veteran to the hospital. That’s because they were making a service call of a different kind: To shovel the snow from her front porch. EMT personnel saw the need — yes for themselves — but more importantly for the O’Callaghans to make sure they had a clear path after Clyde returned home so they wouldn’t slip on the cold, icy, snow, thus possibly suffering a major injury. We thank all the personnel, including those in law enforcement and transportation, who have gone the extra mile like those EMT personnel to make sure our roads and we are as safe as possible during inclement weather.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those working on the Green Zone Iniative, which would provide sort of a one-stop shop to provide better services for our veterans in Carson City.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Western Nevada College baseball star Matt Young for being named as Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Week, following teammate DJ. Peters who also won the honor.
