150 Years Ago

Fire. The frame building on the corner of Third and Ormsby streets known as the Head Quarters Saloon was in flames. If it hadn’t been for the quick appearance of the fire engines, a vast amount of property would have been destroyed. The two-story frame building in rear of the St. Charles Hotel used as a kitchen and a lodging place above was in a sheet of flames. The great quantity of water poured upon it by the engines kept it from being consumed. Never were two engines worked to better advantage than the Warren and Curry Engines. The St. Charles Hotel, Muller’s Hotel and the Pioneer Stage Company’s stables were saved with great difficulty. The members and attaches of the Legislature are to be highly praised for their timely efforts on the occasion. (Continued on Tuesday).

The White Cross Army is an organization of young men who wear a white cross. They are pledged to treat all women with respect, put down indecent language, to maintain the law of purity and to endeavor to fulfill the command, “Keep thyself pure.” The formation of a division in San Francisco would furnish opportunities that our numerous professional humbugs would hail with delight. The Red Light District: There is an article explaining the stand of the Appeal on the question of moving the red light district to parts unknown, leaving the women to protect themselves and the man who is looking for the wares that are listed in this particular district, to run rampant over Carson looking for questionable quarters. Photo caption. Candy Roper, 6, smiled her approval as Gov. Grant Sawyer signed the annual Easter Seal Campaign proclamation for the State of the Nevada in the presence of Candy and Mrs. Clyde Collins. The campaign is to raise funds to combat diseases that cripple children and to help restore them to normal activities.

Rare Leap Year babies. The nurses at Carson-Tahoe gave their special congratulations to three baby boys born on Leap Day. Paul Heath Sunseri, Michael Joseph Esenarro and Justin David Wall were all born on the 29th of February 1996.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
