150 Years Ago

A dreadful calamity. Sen. Lambert of Washoe County was aroused from his bed at the White House by a messenger who brought him news that his house in Washoe City had burned to the ground. All of the contents of his home and his younger son, an invalid, had perished in the flames. Another son, Charles, was badly burned. Mr. Slingerland asked the Senate to grant him an indefinite leave of absence. Both houses of the Legislature adjourned out of respect of the afflicted senator.

130 Years Ago

All sorts. The Carson churches will keep their doors open all week to give the sinners a chance for redemption. Sweeny is harvesting his ice. It is the only crop on his ranch that came up this year having had plenty of irrigation.

110 Years Ago

Some cold. The water mains along Brougher Avenue are frozen for keeps. The coldest weather ever experienced has been so cold that the thermometers have frozen up and turned their faces to the wall. Even plants in windows have been freezing and crumbling like crushed ice.

80 Years Ago

Washoe Zephyr. The wind swept over this section playing havoc with light and power. Two of the 66,000 lines of the Sierra Pacific Power Company went out. In the wee hours the Sanitary Dairy was without electric light or power for operating the milking machine. Miners in Dayton near Silver City were obligated to climb ladders, the hoist being out of commission because of electricity. There were many broken and uprooted trees, one fell across the driveway in front of Dr. Thom’s garage. A couple large windows on the west side of the boy’s quarters at the state orphans’ home were broken with bits and pieces of shattered panes falling on unoccupied beds.

20 Years Ago

The First Presbyterian Church on North Nevada Street in Carson City may be lost if the First Presbyterian Church moves forward with its plan to demolish the historic sanctuary to construct a newer, larger facility. The structure was completed in 1864 and is he oldest church in the state.
