SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City can now MAC out

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Carson City can be proud of its newest recreational center — the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center, also known as the MAC — which just recently opened. The MAC features several courts which can be used for sports such as basketball and volleyball and an indoor running track. It definitely meets the growing need of the community’s recreational activities as instead of holding the various community activities at different — and many times not adequate — facilities, all these activities can now be held in one place. The MAC should also generate revenue in the future as well as the facility can be used for regional tournaments as well.

SILVER DOLLAR: To two local athletic greats, Shawn Estes and Greg Hess, who are being inducted into the NIAA Hall of Fame in February. Estes, a 1991 Douglas High graduate, went on to pitch in the Major Leagues, including with the San Francisco Giants. Hess was a standout in basketball and baseball at Virginia City in the early 1980s and led the Muckers to state titles in both sports.

WOODEN NICKEL: Regardless of what you think of him politically, Donald Trump has no business saying the NFL has gone “soft” as he did at a recent rally in Reno. It’s just a cheap shot from someone who has no idea of the rigors it takes to play in the NFL.
