Most science teachers do just that — they teach science. But at Sierra Lutheran High School, a small, private school of 124 students in between Carson City and Minden, Marty Kois teaches earth science, biology, business math, test prep, and theater.

While any educator will tell you five course preps is a hefty load, Kois not only teaches all five well, but injects life into each class despite the wide variety of content that he teaches. Sierra Lutheran Principal Jules Clausen shared that Marty is “one of our exciting young teachers who is not only passionate about the material he teaches, but innovative and creative about how he teaches it.”

Clausen was quick to point out that Kois’ dedication and creativity are not only present in the science department, but in Sierra Lutheran’s theater program as well.

Kois teaches the theater course at Sierra and directs two productions a year.

“He really loves his students, and it shows,” Clausen pointed out.

It is little wonder that Marty was chosen as Carson City Rotary’s Teacher of the Month for the month of January. At a ceremony on Jan. 19, Rotary President Fernando Serrano and Carson City School District Superintendent of Schools Richard Stokes presented the award to Kois.

“He is one of the best teachers at this school because is passionate about the subjects, and his teaching style is really helpful,” said Heather Kubel, a senior at Sierra Lutheran, who had Kois as a teacher for three classes during her time at the school. “He made learning memorable.”
