Breaking ground for the Mint: The ceremony of breaking ground for the foundation of the Mint was performed this morning at 8 o’clock. The first shovelful was dug by John H. Mills, Esq., the next by H. F. Rice, Esq., the third by Col. Abraham Curry and the last by Mr. Mighels of the Appeal ... And the work will go bravely on.

All sorts: Mr. Clem Berry just returned from Oakland where he buried his daughter Lucy Merriwether, aged 33. Sixty Chinese men have left Carson for Reno to work on the Narrow Gauge line.

All sorts: Nine railroads are being built in Nevada at the present time. A train wreck at Jack Rabbit is described by the Pioche Record. The train was running at a high rate of speed when the fireman jumped off and ran out of harm’s way.

Lightning: Warren Engine firemen were called out to extinguish a blaze north of town that were ignited following lightning strike. It struck the stovepipe of a house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Gillis.

Cap on growth rate: Carson City will issue 3 percent more building permits in 1997. The city issued only 69 percent of its allotted building permits in 1995 according to Walter Sullivan, director of the city community development department.
