SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Swirczek’s reach will not be forgotten

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Western Nevada College professor Marilee Swirczek, who died last Sunday at the age of 68. Swirczek was a community leader who was instrumental in the creation of the nationally-recognized “Always Lost: A Meditation on War.” A Silver Dollar doesn’t go far enough, but we thank Marilee for her long-lasting impact on Carson City.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all the youth who volunteer their time in community service at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada as shown last week when they worked at the Greenhouse Project at Carson High. They truly were reaping what they sow.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Nevada Appeal columnists Guy Farmer and Roger Diez, who have now been writing for the Appeal for more than 20 years. Diez has covered the local and national motorsports scene for the Appeal during that time while Farmer has become an institution in which readers look for his column on the left column of the Opinion page of the Appeal every Sunday.

WOODEN NICKEL: To Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald for stating “to the most entertaining capital city, Las Vegas” at the Republican National Convention. Of course, our community, Carson City, is the state capital. We’ll give McDonald the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant to say Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world, but on the biggest stage — and when you’re representing Nevada — you better get it right.
