The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the USNS Carson City for completing its acceptance trials. The vessel is now on the verge of being formally accepted by the U.S. Navy and we couldn’t be prouder.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Library for receiving a top 10 national rating for its NCLab Coding Camps.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those who were involved in putting on Safe Grad for Carson High’s graduates, providing a safe way for the class of 2016 to celebrate its graduation.

SILVER DOLLAR: The term quality of life gets thrown out a lot, but all those involved in the development of the Richards Crossing deserve credit for what will surely improve the quality of life of our community and the quality of life of our community’s homeless and homeless veterans.

WOODEN NICKEL: Speaking of quality of life, there seems to be an uptick of vandalism lately with reports of such things as waterlines stolen and graffiti. Plus, we’re hearing reports of more trash and debris being piled up where it shouldn’t be. Regardless of where you stand on Carson City’s efforts to improve its quality of life, our quality of life begins with basic decency and maintaining what we already have in a proper manner.
