Steampunk festival to visit Nevada State Railroad Museum

Part art and fashion, metal and mechanics, the Steampunk movement comes to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City for a Father’s day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18.

Historic and futuristic at the same time, the movement melds creativity and imagination with the power of heavy equipment — sort of Victorian Era meets the science fiction.

The first of its kind for the museum, the event will feature specially priced tickets that will include unlimited trains rides all day and museum admission.

Regular pricing is also available for single rides, entrance to the museum and a host of fun activities sponsored by the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

“We have food trucks, music, a craft fair and everything you might expect at a festival, but so much more that might surprise you,” said Rebecca Bevans, a volunteer for the group.

Bevans’ family is devoted to the Steampunk theme, with trash-to-treasure garb and their own dialect. High Desert Steam, a Steampunk group from Reno, with members from all over Northern Nevada, will appear at the festival.

In Steampunk spirit, the museum provides the metal and steam with the historic locomotives of the 19th century, Locomotive No. 25 and the collection’s famous McKeen motor car, a still-futuristic looking self-propelled railroad car that began its life in 1910 and operated on the rails in Carson City.

All-inclusive tickets for admission and unlimited rides are $15 for adults 18 and older, $10 for museum members, $5 for ages 4 to 17 and free for ages 3 and younger. Single train rides are $8 for adults age 12 and older, $4 for ages 4-11, free for children age 3 and younger and half price for museum members. Museum Admission is $6 for adults and free for museum members and ages 17 and younger.
