The Nevada Department of Transportation is warning holiday travelers they can expect some delays when driving on U.S. 50 near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe.
A contractor is in the process of constructing a 60-foot long, 27-foot tall tunnel extension on the westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel. The tunnel is designed to prevent rock fall from the rock onto the roadway. In addition, white paint and lighting will be added to both tunnels for better visibility and automatic signs added to notify drivers of bicyclists or potentially icy conditions in the tunnels.
The project is on schedule, according to District Engineer Thor Dyson, but only about 25 percent complete.
“We encourage everyone to visit and enjoy Lake Tahoe,” he said. “But with many visitors traveling to Lake Tahoe for holidays such as the Fourth of July, drivers should plan a little extra travel time for road improvements being made in the cave Rock Area.”
Traffic is currently reduced to one lane in each direction through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel.
Q&D Construction is building the $6 million project.
