150 Years Ago

Empire post office. A post office has been established at Empire that is needed by the residents of that place. It will be convenient to the mill men and others doing business. Mr. L. Blochman has received the appointment of Postmaster. (Empire was about three and a half miles east of Carson. The town site was laid out in March 1860 and named Empire City. Early settlers called it the “Seaport town” because of frequent floods).

Sunday’s runaway. Matt Brannan was driving Muller & Schmitt’s dogcart along King Street when the wheel sank into the street. The horse, shying, threw Brannan out, but he still held the lines as he as being dragged along. He called out to Miss Blanch Davis to jump out of the dogcart, and she escaped with slight injuries. Brannan was bruised. The horse collided with a fence and smashed the dog cart to flinders.

110 Years Ago

Another suggestion. Dr. Stubbs, president of the University of Nevada, in a letter addressed to Controller Davis, urges the new Mining Building at the University as the proper place for the Borglum statute of the late John Mackay.

70 Years Ago

Advertisement, “Carson Theatre — ‘Lady on a Train’ with Deanna Durbin and Edward Everett Horton — Splendid mystery comedy. Miss Durbin sings several songs you will enjoy — Cartoon and News.”

50 Years Ago

Zsa Zsa Gabor. Wearing a mink coat, Zsa Zsa Gabor signed on the dotted line to get a marriage license to wed for the fifth time. Texas oil millionaire Joshua S. Cosden Jr. got the license one day after Miss Gabor filed for a Mexican divorce from Herbert Hutner.

20 Years Ago

Nevada growing. Nevada was listed as one of the nation’s fastest growing states. Nevada’s Douglas County posted a 14 percent growth to win the title as the fastest growing county in the state in 1994.
