Local affairs. The public school — We are informed the scholars in attendance of the public school in Carson now number 130.

Advertisement: “Grand Skating Carnival and Ball at the Carson Opera House, the Virginia Orchestra and Band engaged for the occasion, consisting of eight men. Five prizes will be given away as follows: No. 1 — to the richest dressed gentlemen; No. 2 — to the richest dressed lady, No. 3 — To the most original character by lady; No. 4 — to the person holding the lucky number every person in the hall is entitled to a ticket. Prizes are now on exhibition at John G. Fox’s store. A “costumer” will be on hand March 31 to furnish costumes at prices to suit the times. Maskers will be required to enter the stage door and raise their masks before a Committee of Inspection. The ladies will take their skates to the ladies’ dressing room where an attendant will wait upon them. Tickets to carnival — $1.50, reserved seats on stage — .75 cents, gallery — 50 cents.”

Death of Captain Joe. Chief of the Washoe Indian tribe passed to the happy hunting grounds. He has been ailing from pneumonia and passed away at his campoody. The medicine man failed to deliver the right charm, and the Washoes are without a head council. He was of unusual intelligence and a friend of the white man. He sealed the difficulties between the Washoes and the Piutes (sic). The signal fires are burning on the hilltops.

70 Years Ago

Pioneer of state dies. Mrs. Margaret Ferris Dangberg of Carson Valley died. She was born in Galesburg, Ill., in 1848. She first came to Nevada with an immigrant train in 1864 and married H. F. Dangberg at her father’s home in Carson Valley. The late Mrs. Dangberg was a sister of George Washington Gale Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris wheel which was first placed on exhibition in Chicago in 1893. She is survived by two sons and a daughter and 12 grandchildren.

Area news. Fireman Apprentice Mark J. Bowers, USN, son of Mrs. Marguerite L. Bowers, has completed basic engine man school at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Dangberg holdings. Douglas County is suing Dangberg Holdings to see who gets the real and personal property at the old Dangberg Home Ranch. “That is the only location that’s acceptable for the historic park site and the national historic designation,” according to Mike Fischer, Dangberg Home Ranch Advisory Committee.
