150 Years Ago

Indians spear trout. We watched from the bridge that crosses the Truckee River at Stone and Gates Crossing and saw an Indian spear some fine trout in the stream. The trout are spawning and can be seen from the bridge, swimming and playing. We directed the Washoe with his fishing spear to the place where the trout were visible. He waded into the stream and after making a successful jab, he captured a male trout weighing three pounds. The spear used by the Indians is the most effective and ingenious implement of the kind ever seen.

Buffalo Bill’s agent. Frank Gibson called at the Appeal to order some job work. He said he was the agent for Buffalo Bill. Nobody believed him, as he had no big diamond pin on or pants striped in seven colors. He finally convinced the office that he was all he claimed to be. He reminded us of a well-bred Methodist preacher.

Shotgun slaying: Peter Elvik, a 15-year-old boy accused of a shotgun slaying of an elderly Carson City man, has been judged mentally fit to stand trial. After the murder of William Gibson, 63, Elvik stole Gibson’s guns, wallet and car.
