Carson City radio station demolishes transmission towers

Carson City’s radio station, KCMY 1300 AM and FM 102.5 Cowboy Country, took down two 220-foot tall radio transmission towers on Friday.

The towers, originally built in 1954, were located on land leased from Carson City Public Works on Butti Way and Fairview Drive, said Jerry Evans, radio station owner. The demolition has taken the AM radio station off the air for now. He said the stations should be back up in about 10 days. Listeners can still hear programming on FM 102.5.

Evans said the Public Works department needed the towers moved so they had ample room for a helicopter landing pad. P&R Tower Co & Inc out of Sacramento took down the towers.

Evans said work will start Monday on a new 90-foot tower, with a new building. The tower will be about 100 yards west of the current location, also on city property.

“Public Works has been really good to work with,” Evans said.

He called the project a “blessing and curse,” saying in the end signal strength will be better for the stations among other improvements.

“It was overdue to be done,” he said.
