A very melancholy casualty. Mr. Robert Howland was seriously injured by the accidental discharge of a Derringer pistol. He was seated on the outer step of the middle entrance to Mr. Meyer’s house cleaning a pair of Deringers. He turned and picked up what he thought was the right one and accidentally took up the loaded one. He was only made aware of his mistake when the gun exploded in his right side. Surgical aid was called. Dr. Bryerly answered a telegraphic summons and came down from Virginia (City). He and Dr. Munckton examined the wounded man and determined it to be a very, very bad wound.

Artisian water. Mr. George Cagwin has five artesian wells, all flowing. One has flowed over two years and the pipe only goes down 13 feet. Every lot owner in Carson should have a flowing well in their yard.

All sorts. Mr. Bohall and family, San Francisco refugees, are stopping in Carson with E. M. Bohall, the tea man. They lost everything they had in the earthquake. Edith Mills, cashier and bookkeeper for a burned out firm in San Francisco, is back in Carson until the firm can rebuild.

Carson City Daily Appeal’s 81st birthday (continued from Wednesday). Its policies were Republican, and the first issue carried the news that Jefferson Davis had been captured — and the people of Carson proceeded to hang the ex-confederate in effigy. Editor of the paper was Henry R. Mighels.

TV Guide for Friday (in part). Rocky & Friends, Beaver, Flintstones, Outer Limits, Sing with Mitch, Addams Family, Smothers Brothers, Man from UNCLE, Johnny Carson.

Historic homes honored (continued from Tuesday). Adele’s was originally built in 1875, the Old Masonic Lodge, 113 E. Washington St. was built in 1872 and is the last remnant of the V&T Railroad. It was the depot until 1950.
Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
