SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City’s Moellendorf was a good sport

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To University of Nevada softball star Jennifer Purcell, a Carson High graduate, who was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association first team. Purcell hit over .400 for the season, including a .391 mark in conference play. Purcell is only the second player in program history to receive first-team region honors. We also congratulate Purcell for being named to the all-Mountain West Conference first team, although we must admit, we have a hard time understanding how she could be named to the regional first team, but just to the conference second team.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the supporters of the Western Nevada College baseball team who raised more than $15,000 in little more than a day to send the Wildcats to the District Tournament in Trinidad, Colo.

SILVER DOLLAR: To retiring Roger Moellendorf for his service as the city’s Parks and Recreation Director. Moellendorf oversaw growth in the community’s open space and other projects such as the construction of the Multi-Activities Center during his tenure.
