150 years ago

Military: A detachment of cavalry, under the command of Lt. Osmer, arrived here yesterday morning from Dun Glen. They are on their way to Sacramento to be mustered out. These troops have been doing valuable service on our Eastern border campaigning against the noble red man. Their places have been taken by the company of the Sixth United States Calvary, which passed through here some weeks since.

Courthouse in Storey County: Yesterday the County Commissioners of Storey opened the bids for the building of a new courthouse and 10 prison cells. Peter Burke was awarded the contract for the building of the courthouse, the front to be of Philadelphia pressed brick, for the sum of $66,989.55. John R. Simms of San Francisco put in the lowest bid for the building of 10 cells, namely $7,068.

100 years ago

Yesterday men were able to go form the New York shaft to the schedule of the recent fire at the compressor station in the Belcher mine and found the timbers all burned, but the ground had not caved. General Manger George Sturges, who arrived form San Francisco yesterday, said it was evident the flames had reached the old Belcher incline.

70 years ago

Bob “Frenchy” Laxalt, Carson athlete, has been selected as the outstanding boxer on the 1946 varsity University of Nevada mitt team. The game 140-pounder, who dropped a close decision to Jasper Tobey of Nixon on the university’s fight card last Friday night, thus becomes the first man to have his name inscribed on a plaque being donated to the school by Boxing Coach Dick Taylor.

Sadie Grant was a business visitor to Reno Tuesday afternoon. She also spent a short time with her sister, Mrs. W.B. Ligon and nieces, Mrs. E.T. Rose and Mrs. E. Canton.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
