150 Years Ago

Mr. John D. Winters: A double buggy drawn by six horses and driven by Mr. John D. Winters, the “Copperhead” Candidate for Governor, drove through town. The display of horseflesh and burlesque candidacy was preceded by the Euterpe Band ... tooting their horns in regular show-shop, band-wagon style. A man by the name of Bell-wether, rode on the seat with Winters, and little Mitch rode on the back seat in company with a lady — his governess, we suppose.

130 Years Ago

Sun-down voters: Men are telling how hard they worked on election day and the personal and financial sacrifices they made. The tallying list in the hands of the Central Committee shows that most of these men voted at quarter to six.

110 Years Ago

All sorts: Jack Dodson has bought the buildings, including the dwelling house in the race track field from the Valley Park Company. W. H. Chedic is rebuilding his slaughter-house recently destroyed by fire. M. C. Gardner will erect a new barn on the site of the building that was burned. Burd Lindsay has forsaken the buzz machine and is making “sweets” at Richardsons.

70 Years Ago

Visitors: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Morgan had visitors at their home on Henry Street. Guests were Rev. and Mrs. E. C. Sloan of Sparks, Mrs. Estelle Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Rive of Nixon, Mrs. Lanore Jewett, Mrs. Cecil Turman and Clarence Smith of Carson City.

Bond rejected: Voters decided that $48.5 million for the future of schools can wait. The bond would have built a new high school on the Western Nevada Community College campus and a new middle school at the south end of town.
