Phase 1 of SR 28 shared use path project shut down for winter

The Nevada Department of Transportation has finished year one of the State Route 28 shared use path project.

The project along the shore of Lake Tahoe, including major stormwater drainage improvements, will take three summers to complete.

This first summer included construction of an underpass beneath the highway near the Flume Trail. Crews also started work on three new parking areas near Ponderosa Ranch and the Tunnel Creek Café so pedestrians visiting the area don’t have to cross the highway.

Officials say during peak summer weekends, as many as 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists are on that stretch of road each day.

This year’s work also included relocation of a sewer pipe near Hidden Beach.

Next spring, crews will continue water quality and roadside drainage improvements including sediment filtration systems and erosion control to prevent contaminants from entering Lake Tahoe.

When complete, the shared use path will stretch more than three miles from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
