Meteor: According to the Petaluma Journal, Sam Smith, night watchman there, said that last Sunday morning at 2 o’clock, a meteor as large as a barn door sped from North to South, lighting up the earth and whirring as it went by.

Gold Hill: The Gold Miners’ Union building collapsed, caused by the heavy snowstorms. The building was built in 1867 and home of first miners’ union west of the Mississippi. The union was organized Dec. 8, 1866 when Gold Hill had a population of over 10,000.

Nugget’s Annual Turkey Treat: Local residents who are unable to afford the traditional Thanksgiving dinner are invited to be guests of the Carson Nugget — meant especially to those families with small children and those who live alone. On the way out, hand the check to the cashier with the remark, “I’m a guest today.”
