Carson City’s First United Methodist Church hosting Living Nativity Dec. 10, 11

Once again, Carson City’s First United Methodist Church is presenting its annual Drive-Through Living Nativity: The Road to Bethlehem.

“Watching the families’ faces lighting when they see the animals,” said Dayton’s Faith Reid, 13, about what she likes best about the event.

There will be live sheep, donkeys and cows when the scene is presented from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11.

People are invited to drive through the scene. Those who attend will be able to enter at Division and King streets, west of Carson Street.

Other youth also talked about what they liked most about the Living Nativity. “That we get to bring the story of Baby Jesus to life for all to see,” said Lauren Winne and Alex Knowlton, both 14 of Carson City, on what they like best about the event.

“I love the atmosphere and the people who participate,” added Winne about the event.

The scene is a reenactment of the birth of Christ. More than 800 luminaria light the road to Bethlehem. Ten scenes over an entire block tell the story.

There will be nearly 200 people of all ages involved during the two nights. There’s also a walking path for pedestrian traffic, including strollers, dogs and bicycles.

About 1,000 people attend the scene annually. The event is free although gifts of food will be accepted.

“I think it’s a good way for telling the story of Jesus,” said Eric Billings, 10, of Carson City. “I like sharing the story of Jesus, and showing what really happened in the story of Christmas and Christ. I love telling the story of Bible times and Jesus.”

The event is also a joyous occasion.

“What I like about the Living Nativity is that everyone who participates is happy, and everyone who watches becomes happy and cheerful,” said Anna Turner, 11 of Carson City.

Barry Combs of Carson City said simply the event is “people celebrating Christmas.” Combs added the event is about “Community, faith, celebration.”

Carson City’s Gene Munnings, who’s a Wiseman in the scene joked, “My wife says it’s the only time I’m wise.”
