Mark Twain and his lecture in Sacramento: The theater contained a liberal share of the beauty, and intelligence and fine clothes of Sacramento last evening. The object of the assemblage was to listen to a lecture by the distinguished humorist, traveler, correspondent and missionary, Mark Twain, upon the Sandwich Islands.

Libel suit: Rev. Joel McWhaker has brought a libel suit against the Appeal for reporting his dog fight at the Sheridan meeting house. Mr. McWhacker is indulging in one of his Tombstone bluffs. The Appeal will pay the costs of the suit if he will come to trial next week, as Mr. McWhacker doubtless has clerical engagements in San Francisco, he ought to have the suit in Court and over with as soon as possible.

100 years ago

This afternoon there were reports of three men being killed to the Industrial Insurance Commission. Paul Pappas, a laborer, was killed by a train at the Nevada Con. Copper company at Ruth and Clifford Mead was killed in a rock fall. An employee of Giroux Consolidated at Giroux was killed by a blast. His name was not given.

70 years ago

In recent letters to his parents T/5 Charles B. (Chuck) Marriage, not attached to the 20th air force overseas described the terrible destruction wrought by typhoons on small Pacific Islands. Marriage said after he left the battle-scarred island of Iwo Jima, a devastating typhoon struck and caused extensive damage. After returning to Iwo Jima from Guam, Marriage said one of the most prominent landmarks left was a huge sign that read “When in Reno visit Harold’s Club.” The billboard was located on the road to Mt. Suribachi.

Gov. Grant Sawyer is leading a voter preference poll by 54 to 46 percent, the Democratic Party campaign coordinator for Nevada said today.

30 years ago

A funeral for Turner Huston, 66, Carson City resident for 36 years and a former two-term mayor was held at the First Baptist Church. He was a retired district manager for Sprouse Reitz Company and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his outstanding contribution to Carson City by the Carson City Rotary in 1981.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
