As election draws nearer the campaign will become more strenuous, and it is quite possible many things will be said that are wide of the truth and had much better be left unsaid. Intelligent people can be fooled but once by the same man. Along about election time many of the politicians bid farewell to truth until after the last ballot has been deposited. This being the case it is quite useless to get excited during the next few weeks because so many things that will not bear the acid test of truth are uttered upon the stump or whispered in the ears of the voters. Truth will return from her vacation after November 7. Churchill County Eagle, Saturday, October 28, 1916

Sam Platt will carry more than half the counties of Nevada in his fight for this election. One of his heaviest encumbrances is his land bill. This is odious to all Socialists, who see in it a scheme to remove from them the right to homestead, by permitting all desirable public land in Nevada to pass into the hands of great livestock and speculation corporations.

On the way to Carson City west of Fallon, you can see the rock walls of a station known as desert wells. If the station were left standing today it would be famous as a place where Mark Twain had stopped. According to his accounts in “Roughing It” it was snowing furiously when he left the Overland Stage station owned by “Honey Lake“ Smith. Traveling through the snow storm on horseback to Carson City, he and his two companions became lost. Twain’s account of their challenges and efforts to build a fire with four wet matches and a pistol is worth any reader’s time. The Fallon Standard, Wednesday, October 29, 1941

Saturday night is the official night set by Chief Don Mills for trick-or-treaters of all ages to run from house to house…Daylight Saving Time will be officially bedded down until next spring this Saturday night at midnight and the usual confusion is expected to result on Sunday for the absent-minded.
