Carson veteran honored as Military Hero of the Game

EyeZone Nevada honored U.S. Navy Chief Boatswains Mate and Army Retired Master Sergeant Larry Knack as the Military Hero of the Game at the UNR football game on Oct. 8.

Knack, a resident of Carson City, served in the Armed Forces for 28 years, including 20 years of active duty. He spent 14 years in the U.S. Navy on board six different ships. During that time, he participated in campaigns in Cuba during the crisis and a Combat River Boat Captain in Viet Nam. As if that wasn’t enough, after leaving the Navy, he spent 14 years with the Nevada National Guard where we served as a First Sergeant and state Physical Security Inspector. All told, he earned 24 ribbons and 15 medals for his service.

As part of his recognition, Knack received four game tickets, pre-game hospitality passes and apparel. Additionally, a videoboard message paid tribute to him during a timeout.

After the game Knack stated, “It was an honor to be chosen to participate in the EyeZone Military Hero of the Game and an experience I will never forget, the recognition I received from the Wolf Pack fans was unbelievable.”

Nominations are still being accepted for the remaining home games. Any active or retired members of the armed forces are eligible, and nominations can be submitted at http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/MilitaryHero. Each submission must include the potential honoree’s name, rank, military branch served and his/her city currently residing, as well as a brief 50-100 word biography.

CHS grad completes basic training

A 2016 Carson High School graduate completed basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio.

U.S. Air Force Airman Shu S. Hsu graduated from an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
