Kiwanis holds successful Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day

The Carson City Kiwanis hosted the 3rd annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness day activities and it was again a success. We would like to thank all the donors and sponsors of holes. Also, all the participants who entered in the events.

The overall winners and second place in the golf tournament were Petersen Plumbing, first place, and second place was Majestic Marbl, also former champions. There were many other categories, including the longest drive for men won by Steve Sear and the women’s longest drive was won by Dorothy Timian Palmer ... both were tremendous.

The 10K run was won by Deborah Chibwe and Mihela Neagos was second. The overall 5K winner was Emmanuel Calderon. The women’s 5K was amazing, it ended in a first place tie between Carson City chief criminal deputy district attorney Kristin Luis and Avery Hudak, a Carson High School graduate and now a UNR student. The timer, Steve Lang, took the time down from minutes to seconds and they were still tied! Avery’s mother passed away from pancreatic cancer just before the event two years ago and it appeared as if the whole Hudak family participated Saturday.

The final event was the bench press, and it is getting more popular every year. This year Richie King, a former outstanding amateur boxer for the Carson PAL and the U.S. Air Force, lifted 335 pounds in the men’s division, and Brandon Sells was second with 315 pounds. The masters champion was Jeff Wittenberg, who lifted 255lbs.

Former Nevada Appeal writer, Teri Vance, won the women’s division, lifting 140 pounds.

Former Champion, Marci Ryba and Kristy Manwaring, tied for second at 115 pounds. There was a large crowd for the events but people who want to participate next year, start getting ready.
