Senator Square: Carson High School HOSA students on fire

The 2017 Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference results are in, and Carson High School students and staff were on fire, proving all their hard work paid off because both students and staff took many of the major awards. CHS received the “Chapter of the Year” award winning first place for having the largest chapter with 325 members, and the “Only Gold” award for membership with 125 percent of Health Science participation. CHS also received the Barbara James Service Awards for volunteer hours with Crystal Vargas having 87, Kalysta Branco 107, Menen Ashagrie 107, Rachel Tran 110, Aneet Mand 156 and Victoria Defilippi with 180 hours.

The Linda Lopez Scholarship goes to Jiavanna Wong-Fortunato. National Service Project Award State Officer for Western Region Vice President is Victoria Defilippi. Chapter Reflections: America Brena. The Healthcare Issues Exam Qualifiers are Jayson Artz, Jessica Camelon, Italo DaSilva, Gabriella Escobar, Sydney Fields, Jacob Wolz, and Rachel Weese with Rachel Tran placing third overall and Menen Ashagrie first overall. In Medical Terminolgy, Sydney Fields received fourth place. In Transcultural Healthcare, Aneet Mand received second place. Winners in Dental Science are Jiavanna Wong-Fortunato with first and Mohammad Abdelhade with third place. Taylor Dawley placed third in Nurse Assistance. In Physical Therapy, Kalysta Branco placed second and Haley Woodward fifth. Camryn Aten took second, Haley Garver third, and Saul Yanez placed fourth in Vet Science. CPR First Aid winners are Jessica Camelon and Victoria Defilippi with first and Italo DaSilva and Maya Vasquez with fifth place. Ethan Byassee, Jakob Carlson, Juan Juarez, and Evan Vizzusi placed second in Public Health. Hannah Hope Hodorowicz placed third in Extemporaneous Writing. Valeria Martinez took first place, Emily Gentile third, and Moises Angulo fourth in Healthy Lifestyle, and CHS’ amazing Crystal Vargas placed first in Job Seeking. As is this was not enough, the “Outstanding HOSA Adviser of the Year” is CHS Health Science Teacher Kelly Gustafson and “Honorary Life Member” is CHS teacher Frank Sakelarios. The Carson City Community can rest assured CHS is preparing its students to become tomorrow’s health leaders.

CHS ALL-STATE CHOIR, ORCHESTRA, AND BAND

Selected CHS musicians are to be members of the 2017 Nevada Music Educators Association All-State ensembles this year in Reno. The concerts take place at Pioneer Center April 8. CHS All-State Choir students are Chandler Blueberg, Kat Byington, Dominic Ceragioli, Abby Gould, Rylan Kane, Haylee Johnson, Paul McCorkle, Carlos Montejano, Cassidy Painter, Nick Perondi, Melanie Proctor, and Wesley Sonnemaker. CHS All-State Ochestra students are: Emma Rosen, Nicholas Rosen, and Eleanor Sturm, and the CHS All-State Band student is Henry Sturm.

GNCU AT CHS PROM CONTEST

Gizhe Cardoza is the winner of the 2017 Greater Nevada Credit Union Prom contest. GNCU is making another CHS senior’s Prom night brighter as the education branch at CHS just gave away a remarkable Prom package. Gizhe receives two prom tickets, dinner at Adele’s, tux rental, a $200 Dillard’s gift card, a prom flower package, and a hair up-do. This Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS giveaway totals $635 of CHS Prom awesomeness. The faculty, staff, and especially the students are grateful for all the GNCU CHS branch has done to add to CHS’ amazingness.

JOIN LINK CREW AND THE BIG BLUE WELCOME

Hey, sophomores and juniors, want to give back to CHS’ students and take part in something bigger to help next year’s freshmen? Join Link Crew today. Find a Link Crew board, pick up an application, and turn it in by April 7 to be a new leader. Link Crew is also hosting the Big Blue Welcome (the club and activity fair) for incoming freshmen April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Senator Square. Also, there will be a raffle that night for students who attend. Donations for this raffle event are needed too, so individuals and businesses should take advantage of this advertising opportunity. GNCU CONTEST

In celebration of National Credit Union Youth Month, the Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS is having a contest throughout April and will be giving away two $100 Visa gift cards to the winning CHS students. In addition, GNCU will give out $10 gift of membership coupons, and students who make a deposit to their account will receive a free gift. Stop by between 7:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for details and to get an entry form. Entry deadline is 1 p.m. April 28.

EOC TUTORING

Freshman and sophomores must pass Math I, Math II, ELA I and ELA II End of Course Assessments in May. Having received a letter indicating they must retake the Math I or ELA I EOC this year, they’re advised to take advantage of exam tutoring after school. Math EOC tutoring will take place in room 225, and English will take place in room 131. There will be a late bus leaving at 3:50 p.m. for transportation.

ACCUPLACER TESTING AND COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

WNC Bridge to Success is offering free Accuplacer Testing for CHS seniors planning to attend Western Nevada College next year. WNC will be at CHS April 3 to administer the test. Stop by the guidance office to make an appointment.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Syrena Chowanski is the Student of the Week. She’s a gifted sophomore who has a great passion for music. She plays many different instruments and is excellent with all of them. Chowanski is a wonderful example for everyone of a student at CHS who has taken advantage of and is becoming all CHS hopes for its students.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s Senior in the Spotlight is on Austin Schofield. Austin has a grade-point average of 4.9 and is finishing his high school career with a schedule that includes three AP and one honors class. Austin is active in the CHS Leadership class and currently holds the office of CHS Senior Class Vice President. In this role, he has helped to plan many of the CHS activities including prom and assists other committees as needed. Austin is currently a member of National Honor Society and once held the position of Junior Class Representative. He’s also a four-time Academic Letter recipient. Austin is also employed with CHS’ tutoring program as a math tutor. He has been a member of the CHS Varsity Swim Team for two years as well as the CHS Golf Team for one year. In addition to his academics, Austin is active at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. Through church and school activities, he has participated in more than 200 hours of community service. Austin was awarded his Eagle Scout in 2015 and still contributes to the Boy Scout program as a mentor for younger scouts. He has also job shadowed an anesthesiologist at Carson Tahoe Hospital for the past two years. In his spare time, Austin loves hunting, camping, and being outdoors. Next year, Austin plans to pursue a degree in chemistry at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, with the goal of attending medical school. CHS is proud of this amazing young man and looks forward to his future accomplishments.
