Dr. Anthony Slonim, president and CEO of Renown Health, was named one of 150 nominees for Modern Healthcare’s “50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders” honor. The list features executives from elite hospitals across the United States including Cleveland Clinic and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Slonim is one of just 34 executives on the West Coast and the only Nevadan to be recognized.
“It is an honor to be recognized in the list of the Top 50,” Dr. Slonim said in a telephone interview with NNBW. “The ability to get things done is how you’re judged as a leader. So to be recognized for this honor is quite humbling.”
Modern Healthcare will select the final top 50 based partially on public voting open now through April 28 at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XFVWR78.
Slonim added that many of the hospital’s initiatives would not be possible without the hard work of its 6,500 employees.
Slonim was nominated by Renown Health Board chairman, Blake Smith.
Recently, Renown collaborated with the Desert Research Institute, and personal genetics company, 23andMe, to pioneer one of the world’s leading community-based genetic health studies with more than 10,000 northern Nevadans taking part.
Dr. Slonim and a staff member indicated during the interview that another community in the United States was following the example of Renown and DRI for 23andMe research. (The community has yet to be disclosed at press time.)
“We are now in a spot where, while we love being the first in this kind of research, we also are flattered another market is following our lead,” he said.
Slonim has expanded Renown’s affiliations with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, SGU School of Medicine, and Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health and Stanford University School of Medicine to expand specialty and subspecialty care and bring more highly trained care providers to the Silver State. He also announced $64 million in new facilities, services and lifesaving technology for the region; increased Renown’s community benefit by more than $1 million; and helped raise $7.5 million to launch a pediatric residency while bringing more pediatric specialists to the region as well as $5 million for the Child Health Institute, which is striving to become one of a handful of pediatric ACOs in the country.
Slonim co-chairs the Truckee Meadows Healthy Communities’ board, a collaborative of thought leaders that looks at the health and healthcare needs of the more than 500,000 residents who call northern Nevada home and determines what solutions are needed to improve both healthcare and overall health and well-being.
Nationally, Slonim recently was named the inaugural editor-in-chief for the American Association of Physician Leadership’s (AAPL) Physician Leadership Journal and online Physician Leadership Library. In this role, he leads an editorial board of international board-certified physician executives, reaching 16,000 physician executives worldwide. For the last four years, Slonim has chaired the American Journal of Managed Care’s ACO Coalition and was recently appointed to the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Care Systems Council. In this role, he is a thought leader representing more than 250 integrated health systems in the U.S. and their concerns to the AHA Board.
Slonim said the accolades and network of healthcare professionals has presented many opportunities for himself and Renown.
“The honors from my peers and colleagues has been an amazing experience,” he said. “This past year has been tremendous for me both personally and professionally.”
