150 Years Ago

An alarm of fire yesterday afternoon was caused by the burning out of the chimney in the Appeal office building. The office was promptly surrounded by firemen and citizens, and the engines threw streams of water over the adjoining buildings as well as the office to prevent danger from sparks. No damage was done.

130 Years Ago

The people who steal Appeals are again at work. When newspaper thieves are on the rampage, in Carson they always seem to fix on the Appeal.

100 Years Ago

Senator J.J. Kelley of Storey County and Charles Smith of Reno, but formerly of Tonopah, have been appointed as guards at the state Capitol building. S.M. Tolan of Reno has been appointed to a similar position at the Governor’s Mansion. No trouble is anticipated at either of these buildings, but is simply a matter of precaution and in line with what other states are doing to protect their property.

C.E. (Johnny) Sanford, popular mentor of the Carsonites, was honored at a dinner Saturday night in the Bamboo room of the Arlington Hotel. Hosts for the occasion were members of the basketball team, runners-up in the town team tournament held here in March.
