Carson City woman arrested after claiming running scam claiming her son had died

A Carson City woman was arrested Friday after pulling a scam claiming her son had died.

Victoria Morrison, 31, was arrested Friday at 7:08 p.m. on suspicion of felony burglary and obstructing after deputies responded to the 3800 block of South Carson Street for a welfare check. The victim asked for deputies to respond to Morrison after discovering Morrison allegedly lied about her son dying.

The victim told police she helped Morrison set up a GoFundMe and Helping One Woman fundraiser after Morrison claimed her son was sick from leukemia and had passed away. The victim later contacted Morrison’s husband to express her condolences when he told her the child was still alive and staying with his mother and other siblings at the Plaza Motel, according to the police report.

When initially questioned, Morrison told deputies that her son had been in hospice care and his body was cremated.

Deputies then responded to the Plaza Motel and identified the boy who was living there. Deputies discovered that Morrison used the false illness to get money from various community organizations including Holiday with a Hero, the McKinney-Vento Students in Transition and private donors.

The child was taken by the Division of Child and Family Services.

Bail for Morrison was set at $20,000.
