Nevada broadband network planned for public safety agencies

The state of Nevada has set a deal with FirstNet and AT&T to set up a wireless broadband network for Nevada’s public safety providers.

“This will make Nevada the 15th state or territory to bring advanced technologies to its first responders, helping them save lives and protect communities,” according to a release issued by AT&T.

Gov. Brian Sandoval said the deal is the right choice for first responders throughout Nevada.

“From volunteer emergency responders in rural communities to those on the front lines in populous areas, our public safety community deserves access to the cutting-edge technologies they need to get the job done,” he said.

Sgt. Mike Edgell of the Nevada Highway Patrol said the partnership will create a network dedicated to emergency responders that will not only enhance capabilities during a crisis but be a tool for the normal course of business. The system will expand network coverage from Las Vegas to Northern Nevada as well as rural areas in between.

FirstNet and AT&T officials said they will begin creating a new wireless system for public safety communications, giving first responders access to voice and data across the existing nationwide AT&T network by the end of the year.
