The Giving Circle at the Nevada Women’s Fund announced today that it has awarded $65,423 to Northern Nevada HOPES. The grant funds will assist in creating a Financial Wellness Clinic to provide clients with financial literacy coaching and education for effectively managing financial resources, as well as access to financial resources.
Northern Nevada HOPES, established in 1997, as northern Nevada’s only comprehensive HIV clinic, has evolved into one of the region’s true community health centers. In 2016, HOPES opened a 38,000-square foot medical facility that has enabled the organization to increase patient capacity from 4,500 to 9,000 in its first year.
According to the World Health Organization, health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Studies are showing that those with lower income are more likely to have poor health outcomes, suffer from mental health concerns and live with more than one chronic disease. Conversely, those with more moderate or higher incomes have lower rates of chronic disease, better mental health, and lower rates of smoking, obesity and excessive alcohol use.
“There is mounting evidence that the relationship between financial well-being and positive healthy outcomes are undeniably linked,” said Northern Nevada HOPES CEO Sharon Chamberlain. “The Financial Wellness Clinic aims to level the playing field for low-income clients of HOPES by providing them with financial wellness coaching and education, in addition to other medical and wellness services, so they may be able to stabilize their financial situation and ultimately achieve optimal health. Grant funding from The Giving Circle at Nevada Women’s Fund is essential to launching this important program.”
“We are excited to support this creative approach to self-sufficiency and healthy living,” said Giving Circle Chair, Nancy Remington. “It is inspiring to see Northern Nevada HOPES take on creative programs for the wellness of our community.”
The Giving Circle at Nevada Women’s Fund, a donor-advised fund, is dedicated to the power and practice of philanthropy, creating opportunities for positive change in the lives of women and children in northern Nevada. The Giving Circle which includes community members, as well as current and former board members of the Nevada Women’s Fund, invites other women to get involved and participate in strengthening and empowering the community.
