150 Years Ago

Theater: “Kill or Cure” and “Out to Nurse” got a good reception last evening despite the somewhat inclement state of the weather. Mrs. Getzier was in excellent spirits, and played and sang with much vivacity and good voice.

130 Years Ago

Last Wednesday a “pogonip” enveloped all the Humboldt country. Trees were bent to the ground under the load of frost that accumulated on their branches during the visitation of the frozen fog.

100 Years Ago

The “barn” dance given last evening by the Leisure Hour Club at its hall was well attended and the spirit of fun and sociability prevailed. The younger generation had some trouble with the steps of the old-time dances, but the older generation seemed glad to welcome them back.

Historic Virginia City once again wins national recognition this week as a colored photograph of the Comstock City is featured in “The Face of America” series in this week’s Saturday Evening Post.

30 Years Ago

In January 1981, Gov. Robert List announced a revolutionary plan to reduce property taxes throughout Nevada by as much as 75 percent. To replace the lost property tax money, local governments were given the proceeds of a 1.75 percent increase in sales taxes. As a result, Carson City’s tax shift became a tax shaft, with only 80 percent of funds being returned.
