150 Years Ago

About 9 o’clock on Thursday evening, a man by the name of Thomas Riley, a dog fighter and keeper of “The Five-Mile House,” American Flat Road, Lyon County, had an altercation with Mike Grady, or O’Grady near Dutch Nicks at Empire and shot him in the face, inflicting a flesh wound. Sheriff Smith with two other men went to apprehend Riley, but the man shot Smith in the groin and made his getaway. Smith, wounded, went to Meyer’s Half-Way House, where in a fainting condition he was put to bed. We are hope to state within a few days that Sheriff Smith is out of danger and able to discharge his official duties.

Mrs. Kate Kinney, widow of the late William Kinney, formerly sheriff of Ormsby County, died at an early hour this morning at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knoblock. In the company of her husband she came to Nevada in 1863, and this state has been her home ever since.

Plans for stringing a large number of colored lights on the large pine tree in the southwestern section of the Capitol grounds during the Christmas season are under consideration. Members of the state board of control are reportedly friendly to the suggestion.

An international flag-raising ceremony Saturday morning will formally signal the opening of the 1957-58 winter sports season at Heavenly Valley ski resort on Lake Tahoe’s south shore.

A memorial service for Dr. John Henry Homer, 80, a resident of Carson City for the past 32 years, was held at the Masonic Temple under the direction of the officers of the Eastern Star. Homer was a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College and served as a Nevada State Assemblyman from 1967-71.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
