Carson City DA to host youth, family services symposium

The Carson City District Attorney’s Office is hosting a Youth and Family Services Symposium for the community.

The event is to allow stakeholders in the area of juvenile and family services to educate one another about what they do and what resources they provide. It also aims to identify areas of service overlap, plan to address those gaps, establish an ongoing dialogue and communications to best serve children and families in the community.

“We want the symposium to remind us that our children and families are one of our most important assets as a community,” said Deputy District Attorney Buffy Okuma. “We also expect it will result in a continued commitment to support each stakeholder in our never-ending efforts to serve our community.”

Day one will be provider panels to share presentations on the scope and nature to their services as well as the challenges they’re experiencing in the community. The second day will be a roundtable discussion to discuss how members of the service community can support one another.

“Carson City has lots of resources available for children and families in need,” said Assistant District Attorney Kristin Luis. “If we can improve the coordination of those resources, that’s going to help serve the community better. As the juvenile judge and now as assistant district attorney, I have seen that a little collaboration can go a long way to making big differences.”

Several groups are scheduled to participate including the Carson City School District, Nevada Division of Child and Family Services, Partnership Carson City and Department of Juvenile Services.

The symposium will be held Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. There’s no cost to participants, but they must register by Dec. 27. Anyone interested in further information should contact Emily Nunez at 887-2070 or enunez@carson.org.
