Death of Sheriff Smith (continued from Sunday): The calamity is a great and irreparable one to the community; and the shock has fallen. Upon all white a most painful and depressing influence. We know but little of Mr. Smith’s earlier history; but he came here somewhat biased and scarred from a fearless and manly contact with the rougher and more trying vicissitudes of life than fall to the lot of the majority, but still resolute, powerful and nervous to a degree that proved him a marvel of courage and physical endurance (continued on Wednesday).

Indian jugglers: The next attraction at the theater will be genuine jugglers from India. Ached Ali Bey along with a company of illusionists and magicians will play here on Wednesday and Thursday evenings of next week. This is a novelty worth seeing.

Another porch comes down: Yesterday the porch at John Sanger’s place of business on Carson Street was taken down. Soon the last of the antiquated affairs will be but memories.

Workers are shoving an estimated two million pounds of high explosives into man-made tunnels beneath a 300-foot cliff in Little Valley, Utah, for next month’s detonation of the world’s largest non-atomic blast. A burst on July 21 used 1,790,000 pounds of dynamite and nitrate fertilizer to crumble 2 1/2 million cubic feet of rock at the same site.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has received $8 million in advance federal funds to purchase right of way for the proposed Carson Bypass.
