First Nation’s Focus calendar of events

The Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center hosts a community market from

5 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays. The center is at 2300 W. Line St. in Bishop, Calif.

Nearly 4,000 attendees from across the U.S. and Canada will be on hand at one of the most effective Native American networking events.

Offering four days of training and business development and two days of the largest Native American business trade show, the annual RES Las Vegas Trade Show is returning March 13-16.

The event offers the chance to showcase your business to tribes, tribal enterprises, federal agencies, corporations, tribal casinos and Native American entrepreneurs and business owners.

Hundreds of exhibitors will be on hand. Also planned is a business boot camp and business innovation forums, in addition to the 29th annual NCAIED Scholarship Golf Tournament.

A weekly women’s circle craft night and potluck is 5 to 6:30 p.m.

A Victim Services Program women’s advisory committee meets from

5 to 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at

101 Big Bend Ranch Road, Wadsworth.

A sexual assault support group meets from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the

fourth Friday of the month at 101 Big Bend Ranch Road, Wadsworth.

A substance abuse support group meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays

at the Sumunumu Resource Center in Fernley. Topics discussed include narcotics abuse, alcohol abuse and anger management.

Scrapbooking for beginners is 5-6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday

of the month at 101 Big Bend Ranch Road, Wadsworth. For information,

Freedom to Be You, a women’s educational support group, meets from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturdays at 101 Big Bend Ranch Road, Wadsworth. A different topic is chosen each week. Child care is available on site during the group session.

A group discussing teen dating violence meets from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. on

the third Wednesday of the month at 101 Big Bend Ranch Road, Wadsworth.

Paiute language classes are offered from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday

at the Wadsworth Community Building.

Yoga classes are offered every Wednesday.

A teen parenting class meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays

at the Sumunumu Resource Center in Fernley.

Free computer classes are held Tuesdays through Thursdays from

9 a.m. to noon at 1662 Highway 395, Suite 105 in Minden; and from

1 to 4 p.m. at Carson Native TANF, 2310 S. Carson St., Suite 1 in Carson City. The class covers keyboard skills and Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. It also helps with setting up an email account, searching for a job, submitting applications, building a resume, and interviewing skills.

Come to the Carson TANF office, 2310 S. Carson St., at 1 p.m. Thursdays to learn how to help your children develop strong reading and writing skills.

The class also includes information from “The Twelve Universal Laws of Success” by Herbert Harris, articles from the U.S. Department of Education, as well as Native based resources.

Talking Circle is held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the second Friday of the

month at the Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center, 2300 W. Line St., Bishop, Calif.

Nevada Urban Indians sponsors Recovery from Abuse, a women’s support circle, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. A recovery support circle for both men and women meets at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays. A Zumba class is held at 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays at Nevada Urban Indians,

A medical clinic is held biweekly at Nevada Urban Indians, 6512 S. McCarran Blvd., Reno. The event is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A sliding fee scale program is in place for those who are uninsured.

Nevada basketball

The Hawks Youth Basketball Tournament runs Feb. 17-19 at the Yerington Paiute Tribal Gym, 171 Campbell Lane in Yerington.

Divisions are 1st-3rd; 4th-6th; 7th-8th grades, with eight youth coed teams per division. Awards will be given to first, second and third place teams in all divisions, as well as MVP and all-tourney player awards.

The Presidents Day Jam Tournament, open to students in grades 2-8, is coming to the Reno–Sparks Convention Center Feb. 18-19.

The event, an AAU West Coast National Championships qualifier, offers trophies and medals to first and second place finishers.

Teams who participate will receive a team discount and a guaranteed entry

in the AAU West Coast National Championships to be held July 13-16.

The cost to participate is $250 per team, with multi-team discounts available.

The 12th annual Fallon Shootout Youth Coed Basketball Tournament is March 10-12. This event allows children in grades 1-8 to compete in a coed basketball tournament. The event takes place in March each year over three days. Teams are taken on a first come, first serve basis until the event is full. There are eight teams per division for a total of 24 teams. The tournament takes place at Churchill County Parks and Recreation, 325 Sheckler Road, Fallon. For information, call the Parks and Recreation office at 775-423-7733.

California basketball

Bishop Indian Sports Club is hosting the 47th Annual All Indian Basketball Tournament Feb. 17-19.

Entry is $425 for men’s teams and $325 for women’s teams.

A non-refundable deposit of $175 is due by Jan. 15. The deposit secures your team’s spot.

The Soboba Braves Basketball Tournament on March 3-4 will be at

Soboba Sports Complex, 24340 Soboba Road, in San Jacinto, Calif.

The first place team gets $3,000 plus jackets. Award for second place is $1,000 plus long sleeve dry fits; shirts will be given to third place winners.

An all-Native plus 2 basketball tournament is planned March 31

at the Soboba Sports Compex in San Jacinto, Calif.

Awards will be given for first place ($2,000 plus free entry to next year’s tournament), second place (pullover sweaters) and third place (T-shirts).

MVP and all tourney prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
