150 Years Ago

Festival: The Episcopal Church festival will take place at the Ormsby County District Courtroom. There will be music in rare abundance and singing, chances for those who dance, benches for those who wallflower, food for the hungry and pabulum for those who thirst. Admittance is one dollar. This can be avoided by the purchase of tickets, the price of which is but eight York shillings apiece.

Methodist church: A steeple is being erected on the Methodist church. The belfry timbers were erected yesterday. We hope that it is handsome spire. As yet, there is not one steeple pointing up from this vale of sin and tears.

130 Years Ago

Cattle thieves: Small cattleman say that the big cattlemen have a habit of announcing that a certain range about a hundred miles long all belongs to them. It is unfenced, and if any cattle happen to stray into their range, they are appropriated. If certain parties are not more careful with their lassos and branding irons, there will be a regular Hong Di matinee in Nevada. Certain men are chronic cattle thieves and will never quit until they see some neighbor hanging to a tree.

110 Years Ago

Olinghouse (now a ghost town near Wadsworth): Charles Saunders, a mining man, started for Olinghouse in an auto accompanied by Miss Lucy and two little children by the name of Leed. As they neared the turn on the grade, the clutch on his machine refused to work, the brake was quickly applied, but also failed to respond. He leaped from the car and attempted to stay the backward progress of the ton-and-a-half car. He couldn’t and then threw himself under the rear wheels with the hind wheels passing over him. When the front wheels came in reach, he grabbed them and by the use of his strength and body, brought the car to a stop. He arrived in Reno in very bad condition with cuts, abrasions, and a fractured rib. It was the work of a hero, and three lives were saved.

100 Years Ago

Social: The Catholic ladies will be giving a social — there will be a fish pond and cornucopias for the kiddies, fancy booth for the artistic, the mystery booth for those who prefer to be mystified, the duck booth, punch, ice cream, cake, sandwiches and wonderful coffee. Last but not least, the “jitney dance,” at five cents per couple.
