The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Advocates to End Domestic Violence and all the restaurants, businesses, entertainment and customers for organizing and participating in a Taste of Downtown.
SILVER DOLLAR: Maybe this deserves a wooden nickel, too, since it’s been a project about 50 years in the planning, but thankfully the final portion of the I-580 freeway bypass in South Carson City is opening. Pedestrians had a chance to walk, bike or run that portion of the freeway on Saturday.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Dayton High graduate J.J. Ply for qualifying for the AAU Nationals in the decathlon. Ply is one of the top decathletes in the nation in his age group.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Colleen Crum for her project in providing books to children in Haiti.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Krysta Palmer who won a bronze medal in mixed diving at the World Championships.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s George Herrick, a Vietnam veteran, who’s retiring from the Zephry Cove Safeway after 46 years with the company.
