150 Years Ago

All sorts: Senator Nye, Col. Curry, Bob Howland, H. G. Parker and Closs have arrived in New York safely according to a telegram sent from Curry to his friends and family.

The roads between Carson and the other side of Empire are literally swamped. A few more days of this nasty weather and the Carson will sweep over its banks and play havoc with the mills. (Old Empire was a few miles east of Carson City, once called the seaside city.)

Snowshoe Thompson, pioneer snowshoe man, started out yesterday with several others to carry Wells, Fargo & Co.’s letter mail from Carson to Placerville.

Remembered the orphans: Archie McDonald, Speaker of the House, gave the Orphans’ Home children a sleigh ride. They want to run him for governor.

Hy Downs (continued from Thursday): The pink tablets induced wakefulness. Hy gave one to Pete Crow, and Pete guarded a duck pond from daylight until the next dawn and never closed a peeper. It also invigorated eyesight, as Pete never missed a duck. One of those was administered to Pansy Gifford and made an orator of him that rivaled anything yet turned loose in the legislative halls. One was given to Gewhaps Goff, and he stood on a rock above the tunnel while the string of oratory filled the air that could be heard all the way to the Holstein ranch.

Conforte: Vice figure Joe Conforte of Reno appeared before a Federal Grand Jury. Conforte said he declined to testify and cited the Fifth Amendment. Conforte has operated brothels in Western Nevada and Las Vegas.

Housing drought: Many first-time buyers have to look in Dayton or Douglas County. According to Colette Burau, of the National Best Sellers real estate office, “We are very short on nice apartments and townhouses ...”
