150 Years Ago

Mail at last: After 17 days mail from California arrived. It was a hotchpotch (sic) of old and later papers and letters and more mail received mostly of an antediluvian date. Fifty men were engaged in clearing the Placerville Road, while thousands of Chinese men and other employees on the Central Pacific Railroad were digging for dear life to get that line opened.

130 Years Ago

The weather: Friend says that this excellent weather has come to stay. During the last storm 48 inches of snow fell, thus the moisture amounted to but four inches of rain ... just in time to start the spring grass.

110 Years Ago

Song and reading recital: Miss Helen and Edith Howe will give entertainment at Odd Fellows’ Hall. The young ladies will be assisted by Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Yerington, Miss Stewart, Mr. Howard, Mr. Platt and Mr. Bohall. These names insure an evening of great pleasure to music lovers.

70 Years Ago

Inaugural ball: Close to 1,000 persons from all sections of the state gathered to honor Gov. Vail M. Pittman. The inaugural ball was held in the high school and was the first to be held in Carson City since Gov. E. P. Carville in 1939. Dress was reminiscent of pre-war days, except for those in military uniforms.

Judge Guild: A party was held to salute the 80th birthday of Judge Clark J. Guild, chairman of the board of trustees of the Nevada State Museum. The party was hosted by Mrs. Mary Guild, Guild’s daughter Marjorie, wife of former Gov. Charles Russell; his son, Clark J. Guild and Mrs. Clara Eglin. Guild was one of the people most instrumental in the founding of the Nevada State Museum and served as chairman of the board of trustees since 1939. He was also instrumental in bringing the Nevada Day parade to Carson City.

Video store: Blockbuster is bringing two new stores to Carson, one to Mills Park Center at Highway 50 East where it will be the anchor store, and one at the Home Center at Highway 395 and College Parkway.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
